Facebook prioritizes posts by friends and family members [2016/07/13 14:08]

Facebook announced on June 29 that the news feed algorithm will be changed to prioritize posts by friends and family members, dealing a blow to media organizations keen to deliver their news articles through the world’s biggest social media network.

In the newly publicized document “News Feed Values,” Facebook outlined that their most important value is “connecting people with their friends and family.” Next in importance is the delivery of information such as current events, followed by entertainment such as live videos and funny photos.

Facebook said that the change in algorithm will feature posts by media companies less prominently on users’ timelines. A number of media companies that rely on Facebook to expand their user base are expected to suffer a setback of Facebook-originated traffic.

As Facebook serves more than 1 billion active users on a daily basis, it is constantly balancing its algorithmic that determines which type of content gets exposed on users’ timelines more frequently.

While advertising through Facebook is important to many media companies in a technologically developing world, broadening its user base through personalizing each user’s news feed is higher on Facebook’s list of priorities.

Facebook executive Adam Mosseri wrote in a blog post, “Our success is built on getting people the stories that matter to them the most.” With the algorithm change, the links that people share with their friends will actually be valued higher, Mosseri added.

At the same time, news media companies are now encouraged to produce more content that induces users not only to view their articles but to actively share links with their friends and family members.
