Scientists develop anti-aging stem cell technology [2016/12/28 11:26]

A group of South Korean scientists has developed a stem cell technique that slows down aging.

The new discovery is expected to help find treatments for age-related diseases.

The team, led by Choi In-pyo of the National Research Council of Science and Technology, discovered technology that could slow down proteins linked to aging.

"Aging is a natural process in living organisms, and most elderly people suffer from age-related diseases. One way to tackle such diseases is to rejuvenate aging stem cells,” the scientists said in a report.

They found a protein called the thioredoxin-interacting protein (TXNIP) p38 that activates aging and chemical materials that regulate stem cell aging.

"There have been many studies related to preventing aging via stem cells. However, it marks the first time finding a factor that regulates aging," said Choi. He added that the discovery can eventually help find treatments for various diseases including cancer.

The findings were published in the journal "Nature Communication."
