Korean Olympic stars apply for IOC membership [2015/08/12 11:34]

Four Korean olympic medalists have applied to become a member of the International Olympic Committe (IOC), according to news reports.

The Korean Olympic Committee (KOC) said former *weightlifter Jang Mi-ran, shooting gold medalist Jin Jong-oh, former *table tennis champion Ryu Seung-min and fencing medalist Nam Hyun-hee have submitted the applications, Yonhap news agency said.

The IOC is set to receive one candidate from the KOC by mid-September, and the Korean body is scheduled to choose the final *candidate among the four by mid-August, accoring to Yonhap.

One of the four, if finally winning the bid, will replace Moon Dae-sung, a current IOC committee member who won a taekwondo gold medal at the 2004 Athens Summer Olympics. Moon’s *term ends following the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games.

Moon is a member of the IOC’s Athletes’ Commission, and enjoys the same *rights as other IOC members, including voting on Olympic host cities.

Meanwhile, Jang won four world championships while Jin won three golds and two silvers in the last three Summer Olympics. Ryu won the Olympic gold in 2004 Athens Olympics, and Nam grabbed a silver in the individual fencing event in 2008 and a bronze in the team event in 2012.
